So another week and another menu del dia sampled. This week took the posse (with a couple of special guests ie. Mammy and daddy Marc) to the familiar barrio around Huertas, certainly a barrio becoming more and more popular with each passing visit! So much so that it could certainly give our beloved Malasana a run for it’s money!!!
This week La Puebla on calle Ventura de la Vega, in between metro’s Sol and Anton Martin, was our target. This was a recommendation from one of our more recently regular attendees Dave Cordillo, a recommendation that certainly didn’t let us down with it’s massive variety of choice, good service and generosity with the vino!!!. All 17 of us took to our seats but it did seem that we hadn’t made much of an impression as at first, service was slow, and they could have been more prepared with simple things like having the wine and bread already on the table, especially if you are expecting such a big group! However with a gentle harassing and a polite verbal kick up the derriere as they came round to take our food orders, proceedings got underway and from that point forward the ever present proverbial banter flowed with no shortage of wine, bread or quality of service.
Having decided Brenners was best qualified in explaining the menu to my folks, we perused the barrage of choice. There were two menus to choose from, one priced at €11.50 and one at €13. All but one (you know who you are!) went for the more economical option.
On exhibition were 16 starters, 23 main courses and 9 deserts!!! There really was something for everyone and with massive portions to boot! As the wine flowed so did the bad language and Robbie’s rectum, our swear jar and mascot, received an almighty magnitude of generosity. However, even though this was Alejandra’s 1st week to have avoided depositing into the little reindeer’s rectum DOESN’T mean she was on her best behaviour and so, from now on, a more vigilant Robbie, equipped with one of Brenners special hearing aids, shall be present at lunch!!!
So, onto the final verdict… The food, good as it was, was not amazing but with all the extras thrown in at no extra charge, ie. vino and casera, we arrived at a well deserved 4 out of 5. So this little loco luncheonette joins a short list of elite menu del dia’s to visit on Madrid’s magnificent gastronomic circuit.
With our bellies full, we rolled around the corner to Naturbier on Plaza Santa Ana, a regular haunt of ours for more fun, frolics and lubrication. It all went downhill from there as the sun set on another great days antics.
Next week see’s the gang visiting La Catederal right beside Puerta del Sol, it couldn’t get more central, so no excuses! Be there or be square, if you snooze, you’ll lose!!! See you all there
